Tell WA Lawmakers: Improve WA Cares With These 3 Fixes

Dani says "I didn't ever think I'd need WA Cares. I was wrong. At age 30 I was partially paralyzed during a routine medical procedure after having my son. If my husband has to quit his job to care for me, we'd have to sell our house. We must improve WA Cares to help all  injured, sick, or elderly people pay for the care they need."

With WA Cares, Dani's family and thousands of other Washingtonians won't have to face this tough decision anymore. WA Cares is a new long-term coverage program so you're not alone when you're sick, hurt, or need help with eating, dressing, and bathing.

We all pay a little into it while we're working (no payments after retirement!), and it's there for us when we need help the most.

Now political interests are trying to take away WA Cares. A new bill, HB 1594, would force tens of thousands of families into bankruptcy in the next few years, just to get care through taxpayer-funded Medicaid or to pay for expensive, unreliable long-term care insurance.

Sign now to tell your lawmakers to oppose HB 1594. Lawmakers should improve, not repeal, WA Cares so all sick, injured, and elderly Washingtonians can get the care they need.

1) Allow people who retire before fully vesting in the program to qualify for a partial benefit,

2) Allow certain out-of-state workers, military families, and temporary workers to opt out of the program, and

3) Explore ways for retirees moving out of state to keep their benefits.

Tens of thousands of families are relying on WA Cares to ease the financial stress of paying for in-home care.

You did the right thing when you created WA Cares, a public long-term care option that helps injured, sick, and elderly Washingtonians recover or age at home.

That's why I'm urging you to OPPOSE HB 1594, a bill to repeal WA Cares that would force tens of thousands of families to rely on taxpayer-funded Medicaid or expensive and unreliable, expensive long-term care insurance.

Instead, you can improve WA Cares with these 3 changes

1.  Allow people who retire before fully vesting in the program to qualify for a partial benefit when they need long-term care.

2. Allow certain out-of-state, military, disabled veterans and temporary workers to opt out of the program.

3.  Explore ways for retirees moving out of state to keep their benefits.

I urge you to improve and strengthen WA Cares to fulfill the promise made to Washingtonians that they will not be alone when they need help the most.
