Global Food Crisis

The world is in the midst of a global food crisis and with the cost of food on the rise -- up 55 percent -- developing countries cannot afford the food they need to properly nourish their people.
For example, a million children in Burundi under the age of five suffer from chronic malnutrition, and in Ethiopia, 84,000 children suffer from malnutrition in famine-hit regions.
World governments pledged billions of dollars in food assistance for 2008, but many nations have not come through. As the world transforms into a truly global community, where nations are increasingly interconnected, it is time for the United States to step up and deliver the aid it promised.
Tell Congress to make good on the promise to help bring an end to world hunger today, and help the 850 million people suffering from chronic hunger and poverty.
Dear Members of Congress,
Consider how little is spent on foreign aid -- less than one percent of the U.S. budget. Even in hard times, the United States has one of the highest grossing incomes in the world; it is our responsibility to do more to fight global hunger and end poverty.
The world is experiencing a growing food crisis with no end in sight. As the cost of food skyrockets, and the financial crisis ripples through the global economy, the world's 850 million hungry are struggling to survive.
In today's interconnected, global community, we must show increased concern for our neighbors around the world. It is time for our country to step up and deliver the aid it promised to help relieve world hunger.
