42 million Americans rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to put food on the table.
But the Senate will soon be debating a proposal that'd drastically cut this critical support.
Right now, the average daily SNAP benefit is just $6.20 – not nearly enough to provide a consistent, nutritious diet. If this bill passes, 4 million children will have a parent that loses benefits, cutting the overall assistance to the family.
Please, tell your senators: We cannot push more kids into hunger. Don't cut SNAP benefits.
The reconciliation bill passed by the House of Representatives includes sweeping changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that could reduce benefits for 11 million Americans, including 4 million kids.
Congress has a chance to improve families' lives, but this bill would only exacerbate food insecurity. Please, preserve and protect the integrity of SNAP and do better for our nation's children!
SNAP has long been a proven program for reducing child hunger and boosting local economies, with every $1 invested producing a $1.60 return. Right now, as 14 million kids face hunger and families spend more income on food than they have in 30 years, cutting SNAP would be catastrophic.
SNAP's success is built on strong federal-state partnerships, where the federal government covers 100% of food benefits and shares the administrative costs with the states. However, the proposed cost-sharing measures would impose new financial burdens on cash-strapped states and communities, hindering our ability to provide for food-insecure children.
This is NOT the best our nation has to offer. We must focus on reducing the cost of groceries and updating daily SNAP benefits, which currently stand at just $6.20 per person per day on average.
