Pheasant rearing and shooting is a multi-million pound business in Britain that subjects around 35 million pheasants annually to the rigours of intensive farming and kills a large number of wild birds and mammals in "predator control" programmes. The artificially reared pheasants are subjected to painful mutilations and are administered a variety of pharmaceuticals in an attempt to combat stress and disease that inevitably result from such conditions.
