This week, the House Energy and Commerce Committee moved forward with legislation that is beyond harmful for the American people. Republicans on this committee
advanced a bill that would
gut Medicaid, kicking nearly 8 million vulnerable people off of their insurance entirely. It is estimated that
$625 billion dollars will be "saved" in these deplorable efforts to cut Medicaid. So what does the GOP want to do with that money?
Use it to give even larger tax breaks for billionaires and big businesses.That's right. These tax breaks for the wealthy at the expense of uninsured people are another piece of nightmare legislation from the GOP. They will then stitch these together to create
Trump's new "megabill," a spending and tax package that, if passed, is sure to have disastrous, terrifying consequences for the American people.This is not a drill. This legislation cannot be allowed to pass.
Sign the petition and demand your members of Congress vote down this dangerous, disastrous, deplorable bill!They are not even trying to pretend to help those in need. Their bill is clear in its motivations: steal from the poor to make the rich richer. In addition to massive slashes to Medicaid, the Trump administration is
finding more "savings" by
slashing food programs for hungry children and families, as well as cuts to education programs and clean energy initiatives. This is truly, abhorrently backwards legislation and we cannot stand for it.
Established as a federal program to help specifically low-income people and families,
Medicaid has served children, pregnant people, those with disabilities, older adults, veterans, and so many more vulnerable people since it was established in 1965.
The fact that Trump and his cronies want to find billions of dollars in savings in the federal budget by going after programs for low-income people is obscene. If this new bill is passed, people who really need Medicaid's services could be shoved off due to
new eligibility restrictions and work reporting requirements, both of which are just GOP attempts to cut people, not to strengthen Medicaid.
For example, the work reporting requirements have been proven ineffective. Arkansas and Georgia both tried in the past to implement such requirements, but
all they ended up doing was kicking off people who were meeting the work requirements but didn't have the time or resources to fill out the mountains of paperwork for Medicaid approval!
And it seems that this is exactly what Trump's Republicans want to do --
kick anyone off Medicaid, eligible or not, to save money to then doll out to billionaires and corporations.We cannot let this happen. We must use public pressure to tell our Congresspeople we do not support throwing vulnerable Americans in harm's way so that the uber wealthy can become even more powerful.
