Iranian asylum seeker, Hamid Kehazaei, who had been detained at the Manus Island detention centre near Australia, died after his life support was turned off at a Brisbane hospital in early September.

The 24-year-old Iranian had been airlifted to the Australian mainland after developing severe septicemia from an infected cut foot while being held in detention.

It is alleged Hamid’s condition deteriorated as a result of bureaucratic delays seeking approval for his evacuation to a tertiary care facility equipped to deal with his illness.

A group of about 50 asylum seekers at the Manus Island detention centre signed a complaint form addressed to detention centre medical providers about the handling of Hamid’s case.

A copy of the form was sent to Guardian Australia and says: “To: The management of IHMS. Those who have signed this paper consider you are responsible for any consequence of not treating the illness of our dear friend Hamid Khazay.”

Hamid Kehazaei is the second asylum seeker detained at Manus Island to die - another man, Reza Barati, was killed during violent clashes which injured another 69 people in February this year.

Australian Immigration Minister, Scott Morrison, has since ordered a medical investigation into the death of Hamid and the care he received while on Manus Island.
