Tell Alabama State Senator: "Biblical" Reasoning Against Teacher's Pay is Nonsense

Alabama State Sen. McGill does not shy away from referencing his personal religion in public statements regarding political decisions, which would normally be problematic, but is especially so when these statements turn out to be extremely hypocritical.

Most recently, he publicly stated that keeping teachers' pay low is "a Biblical principle." "If you double a teacher's pay scale, you'll attract people who aren't called to teach," he said. Alabama's teachers are among the least paid in the nation.

Ironically, as he was so quick to qualify that teachers' pay should be kept low, there was apparently nothing in the Bible that kept him from approving a 67% pay raise for legislators.

Sign this petition to let Sen. McGill know that using his logic, keeping legislators' pay low would also follow this "Biblical principle." Tell Sen. McGill to consider rewarding good teachers to help improve the state of Alabama's education.
Dear Alabama State Senator Shadrack McGill:

I am writing in regards to your recent statement against increasing teachers' pay where you proclaimed that it goes against "Biblical principle." I would like to shed light on the irony of your statement, when in 2007 you decided to approve a 67% pay raise for legislators, allegedly reasoning that the higher pay helped stop corruption.

I urge you to think about what you said regarding teachers, that "If you double a teacher's pay scale, you'll attract people who aren't called to teach." According to your own logic, keeping legislators' pay from increasing would follow this same "Biblical principle."

Imposing your personal religion on Americans that may not share your beliefs is one thing, but issuing hypocritical judgment on teachers or a person of any profession is not conducive to being a respectable leader in the United States of America.

Alabama's teachers are one of the least paid in the nation. While you may not believe in increasing teachers' pay across the board, considering deserved pay raises for good teachers would help improve the state of Alabama's education and encourage teachers to perform better.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
