Fulton County: Don't Euthanize Dogs for Space While Fosters Step Up

I have spent years loving dogs who were handed a bad start, and this week's news out of Fulton County breaks my heart.

Fulton County Animal Services held 454 dogs overnight, about 80 over its target capacity of 375. Even after the count dropped to 423, the shelter was still 48 dogs over capacity. Kennel space is down because of a county painting project, and dogs keep arriving in pairs, groups, and whole litters. Local reporting says the crowding pushes the shelter toward possible euthanasia decisions. The shelter asked for homes for 27 dogs by 7 p.m. last Thursday.

These are not statistics. Each one is a dog who can learn a name, sleep on a couch, and love someone back. A few days or weeks in a foster home frees a kennel and saves a life.

I am asking the Fulton County Board of Commissioners and LifeLine Animal Project to make a public commitment: no healthy or treatable dog will be euthanized for space. At the same time, the shelter runs an emergency foster and adoption push. I am also asking them to publish daily intake, capacity, and at-risk numbers so the community can see exactly how many fosters are needed, and to finish the kennel renovation without cutting lifesaving capacity.

Fulton County residents want to help. Give them a clear number and a clear promise, and they will show up. Please sign, and if you live near Atlanta, check the shelter's at-risk page and consider fostering.
