Electricity and Water are Basic Rights for All Lebanese

Sign this petition and let us get it into parliament through our elected public servants.  There is no logical reason why 80% of our water goes directly to sea, while we buy over priced water from local water sharks and beg for electricity from our neighbors.

Not to mention the millions of dollars spent annually on fuel oil for our aging power plants.  And if you are all about being green, this is also for you.  Can you imagine life without the Jieh and Zouk power plants. Hydroelectric power is clean and renewable.

In brief: everybody wins.

Green Power
Affrordable Clean Water
Irrigation
More Produce
More Farm Land...
More Exports
Jobs...

People who have a lot to lose: A handful of politicians and extremely powerful and wealthy businessmen who are currently making a killing selling fuel and water.

The Litani Power and Irrigation Project consists of:
a) construction of the Karaoun dam on the Litani River and a reservoir;
b) construction of the Bisri tunnel;
c) construction of the Bisri penstock and power plant;
d) construction of the Joun diversion dam and tunnel;
e) construction of the Joun penstock and power plants;
f) transmission lines and substations; and
g) construction of irrigation works for 3400 ha between Saida and Beirut.

The execution of the project presents difficult engineering and construction problems due to geological formations encountered, but these difficulties can be overcome if qualified engineers and contractors are employed. Firstly, the Saida - Beirut irrigation system will utilize the storage provided by the reservoir. This system should be financially self-supporting with reduced water rates it should make a substantial contribution to increase agricultural production.

Secondly, this is essentially a power project and with an adequate market power should develop at a rate to justify the proposed installations. The project will produce power at nearly 20 percent less cost than would be obtained from thermal plants.

This project will generate employment throughout the year and there will be further opportunity for indirect employment in commercial activities, contributing to the economic and social development of Lebanon.
