Hidden Lake Airport in Pasco County, Florida, is using bowhunting to control resident deer populations. We've informed airport officials about the extreme cruelty associated with using bows and arrows to kill deer, but we've been ignored. In the meantime, we're told that local officials are investigating the horrific death of a fawn whose body was found near the airport.
Bowhunting is among the cruelest forms of hunting. Many deer who are shot are merely wounded by arrows. Bowhunters routinely spend hours tracking the blood trails of deer struck by arrows before finding the animals. Three decades of research tells us that for every one or two animals struck by arrows and retrieved by bowhunters, another wounded animal disappears, never to be found. And the slaughtered deer aren't the only victims: Mass killings tear families apart, leaving young and weak animals vulnerable to starvation, dehydration, and predators.
We ask Hidden Lake Airport officials to halt cruel bow hunts and stick with humane deer-management methods.
