To whom may listen,
On Friday June 23rd, Charles %u201CChaz%u201D King III, Michael Freund and Jordan Henika were sentenced to 120 days in jail and 24 months probation. I cannot speak for Michael and Jordan as I have only known them for a brief period but the fact that Chaz has chosen them to be within his circle of friends is a compliment towards their general kindness of heart. The purpose of this letter is not to %u201CSet Chaz Free%u201D but to display a flaw of a broken legal system whose principals showed backward mindedness and put these young undeserving faces in a false, negative light.
Chaz is my role model and who I try to mold my moral decision making after and I would estimate the amount of Lansing area teens that hold that to be true to be of the plenty. Chaz is an upstanding member of society in the eyes of his peers and of the adults that parent those peers; a true and honest mold of what I want my children to resemble. To make an example out of these three boys, especially Chaz, is like trying to convince India that Gandhi wasn%u2019t a role model. Most people label a criminal as someone who is unsafe for society. It%u2019s incredibly confusing and unjust to label Chaz as a criminal because he is completely safe for society and for these 120 days he is gone, Holt will be a less joyful, pleasant place.
On any given Monday night you can find Chaz at Sammy%u2019s Restaurant in Holt, entertaining the %u201CRegulars%u201D with magic tricks. Everyone in the community knows Chaz for his incredible magic and uncanny ability to make anyone laugh. Of all the time I have spent with Chaz, I have never seen or heard of him breaking the law or doing anything that anyone would consider immoral. Yet he is going to jail. I have attached a set of signatures to attest to the high character and level of morale of Charles King III. I am not a legal expert and by no means am I suggesting that I could plan out a better system in which this wouldn%u2019t happen. But I hope that whatever flaw in the legal system that landed these three young men in jail can be at least recognized by those in power after reading this letter and seeing these signatures.
