Due to increased traffic in and through Pine, AZ we the undersigned, in the interest of pedestrian & traffic safety request that speed limits be adjusted on State Highway 87 as shown.
From Strawberry south on Hwy 87 to Strawberry Hollow Turnoff: 45 MPH
From Strawberry Hollow south on Hwy 87 to Gunrunner's: 35 MPH
Within Pine and Strawberry: 25 MPH
We the undersigned request a reconsideration of the speed limits in and surrounding these towns in northern Gila County. 35 MPH through Strawberry and Pine is excessive when combined with our pedestrian/animal traffic, school bus stops and side road turns from a single lane highway. By lowering the speed limit to 25MPH within these communities, we hope to have fender-benders rather than injury accidents. We hope to see vehicle stopping ability increased to allow for pedestrians and turning.
The downhill, curvy section of Highway 87 from Strawberry south to Pine definitely increases vehicle speed, even unintentionally. Many drivers find themselves reaching the Pine 35 MPH sign at a speed of more than 55MPH and must brake heavily. NO ENGINE BRAKING signs need to be erected at both ends of Pine and Strawberry. The section of highway 87 from Strawberry south to Pine also hosts many resident Elk and Deer crossing in that area, just around one of the curves. The final incentive to slow down the traffic are the side roads of Strawberry Hollow, Valley View Drive, Portals IV entrance, Rusty's Taxidermy, Gunrunner's and the LDS church. Coming down the curves from Strawberry at 50 MPH does not allow sufficient time for braking for these situation which again, could be around a curve and out of sight.
We ask that you give this request careful consideration. No one wants to see an injury or death accident if it can be avoided. Keeping the traffic slowed down in Strawberry and Pine and the 3 miles in between will go a long way toward careful and manageable vehicle traffic in our communities.
