Turn off some streetlights!

  • av: Jacob Powell
  • mottagare: To stop such a huge amount of energy and money being used on streetlights. To reduce light pollution due to street lights.
Whether you think man is having an effect on the climate, get dazzled when heading towards a town in the car, find it hard to sleep, can't see as many stars at home as you can on holiday or just hate the idea of so much energy being used this is a petition to try and reduce the number of unneccessary streetlights.

The amount of energy, money and spent on streetlights every minute of every day across the globe, is just phenomenal.
Some streetlights are needed to make an area safer, some are for security reasons but many are unneccessary and also create so much light pollution it is now impossible to see a truly clear night sky anywhere in the United Kingdom.
There are some parks/ reserves in Scotland currently trying to achieve this.

Trials have been set-up in parts of the UK in recent years to see what effect turning off certain village's streetlights from certain times (about midnight to early morning) but have come to nothing. Similarly in early 2009, parts of the M5 motorway's lighting was turned off between midnight- 5am for energy/ money saving reasons by Devon County Council.

Even if none of the above points have an effect on you, surely turning off the least important streetlights over the early-hours (eg midnight-4am) can only be a good thing!?
We the undersigned believe that there are far too many streetlights in the world. We do not believe that they cannot save lives and reduce crime but we do believe it is possible to achieve the same thing with less of them.
There are too many streetlights on local city streets and they are placed too close together. Many are covering roads and motorways for no apparent reasons. Even if you discard the rest of the information, imagine how much energy, money and light pollution could be saved if the least important streetlights across the UK/ globe were all switched off between certain hours, such as very early morning (for example, midnight-4 o'clock). Please take into account our views.
