The Right to Love

We believe that it is love that makes a family. If only that were legally true as well.

In 1996, Congress passed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which forbids the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages and the protections that come with it.

Because of DOMA, same-sex couples are excluded from the 1,138 federal laws in which marital status plays a role, including Social Security survivors' benefits, the right to take leave to care for a spouse, U.S. immigration laws, and more.

All across this country, same-sex couples are living the same lives that heterosexual couples live -- raising children and trying to save for their educations, committing to each other emotionally and financially, paying taxes, serving on the PTA, and struggling to balance work and family. They have the right to also have their lives together recognized by the federal government.

It's time to do away with DOMA once and for all. Tell Congress to repeal this discriminatory and hurtful law.

It's time to do away with DOMA once and for all. I urge you to support its repeal.
