Take Action! Urge President Obama to solve the Pacific salmon crisis on the Snake River.
When Meriwether Lewis and William Clark arrived on the banks of the Snake River in 1805, the Columbia-Snake River Basin in America's Pacific Northwest boasted the greatest salmon stocks on Earth %u2014 up to 30 million salmon returned home each year.
Today, however, populations linger near just one percent of that historic number. Wild salmon and steelhead - a valuable economic resource for the Northwest and a treasure to the Nation %u2014 are in danger of extinction.
Right now, four costly and outdated dams on the lower Snake River in eastern Washington stand in the way of effective solutions to the crisis affecting salmon, West Coast communities, and taxpayers nationwide. These four dams block access to thousands of miles of resilient habitat that provide wild salmon and steelhead the best and likely only chance for survival, particularly given our changing climate. After more than 8 billion US taxpayer dollars wasted on ineffective and illegal programs, the effects of this crisis can be felt across the country. It is time to remove these costly dams to restore salmon, create new jobs, protect the integrity of the Endangered Species Act, and promote the development of a clean energy economy.
Crafting a Win-Win Solution for Salmon and People
The Obama administration and a new Congress offer us a fresh opportunity to bring people together to craft a science-driven, economically viable plan that removes the four lower Snake River dams to recover endangered wild salmon, create family-wage jobs, invest in our fishing and farming communities, and encourage the development of truly clean, salmon-friendly energy resources. Using the best scientific and economic information, President Obama and Congress have an opportunity to work collaboratively with fishing, farming, and energy interests to tackle the crisis in the Columbia Basin and restore wild Snake River salmon and steelhead to healthy, abundant levels.
