Tell the public about climate change

US President Barack Obama promised hope to those who understand the perils of global warming when he ran for office. His campaign ads featured promises of green jobs and alternative energy. His 2009 State of the Union address addressed the need for "a market based cap on carbon pollution" and "renewable energy." But Obama's difficult years in office have thrown him off message.  Last year's state of the union address skirted the climate change issue altogether, notes ThinkProgress.org columnist Brad Johnson.
The president's recent silence doesn't mean global warming or the devastating storms it brings--which include Hurricane Katrina--have gone away, however. America needs an aggressive action plan to combat climate change now even more than in 2009. Ask President Obama to talk to the public about climate change in his January State of the Union Address.
We the undersigned respectfully ask that you use your upcoming State of the Union address to talk to Americans about climate change. There is no better pulpit than the American television. We understand and honor the efforts you have made to introduce carbon reducing legislation, and we empathize with the frustration you must feel when highly-placed public officials block needed change. But you cannot fall off message. Americans need to understand how dangerous climate change really is, and you are the one to tell them. Your recent silence on this issue fuels the craziness of global warming deniers and gives momentum to their ruinous agenda.
