Urge AbitibiBowater to protect intact areas of the Boreal Forest

On September 24, 2008, activists supporting Greenpeace's efforts to save pristine intact forest occupied the world headquarters of AbitibiBowater. Support our activists and ancient forest protection by asking the companys president and CEO to stop logging the remaining intact areas of the Boreal Forest under AbitibiBowater management.

Tell the CEO and VP for Sustainability and the Environment of AbitibiBowater that American citizens also support the conservation of intact Boreal Forest!

Urge AbitibiBowater to protect intact areas of the Boreal Forest

AbitibiBowaters Impact on the Boreal Forest
AbitibiBowater is the largest logging company in Canada. More than 65 percent of the land it manages has already been fragmented and degraded, in part leading to the endangerment of woodland caribou. Less than 3 percent of the land under AbitibiBowaters management is protected from logging in Québec, and less than 6 percent in Ontario. Meanwhile, the American public consumes significant amounts of the 59 million acres controlled by AbitibiBowater. For more background on US companies selling us Boreal Forest destruction you can read our report Consuming Canadas Boreal Forest: The chain of destruction from logging companies to consumers.

Discussions Collapse
Mediated discussions between AbitibiBowater and Greenpeace collapsed after AbitibiBowater negotiators confirmed that the company would not stop logging intact forest areas in Québec and Ontario. Our goal throughout was to develop and agree on a formal, long term, science-based process to find permanent solutions, and for many months we believed we were making progress. Unfortunately, AbitibiBowater is not convinced it is important to protect the Boreal Forest.

Dear Dave Paterson, Denis Leclerc,
As the new head of AbitibiBowater, a company that controls large areas of public Boreal Forest, I urge you to reconsider your position on the conservation of intact ancient forests.

It is unacceptable that over the majority of your companys logging territory in Québec and Ontario is fragmented and degraded, including areas vital for threatened woodland carribou.

It is even more unacceptable that less than 3 percent of all the territory managed by your company is protected from logging in Québec, and less than 6 percent in Ontario.  As an American, Im not interested in consuming Boreal Forest destruction.

Mr. Paterson, intact forests are vital ecosystems for maintaining biodiversity, protecting threatened species and stabilizing the worlds climate.

I urge you to truly embrace environmental sustainability and set aside the most pristine, important and intact areas in the Boreal Forest.
