Say "Yes!" to Off-leash Dog Park in Downtown Augusta

Dog parks provide dogs (and their owners!) with an excellent place to play, exercise, and get to know others like them! We, as dog lovers and owners in Augusta, GA, have a chance to give our pets (and ourselves) such a place. Other cities in the Southeast and all over the country have enjoyed off-leash dog parks for years, and it's time for us to do the same.

For example:
Athens, GA opened a 4-acre fenced in off-leash dog park in 2002.
Asheville, NC currently has 1 full-time, off-leash dog park.
Atlanta, GA has 14 dog parks around the city and suburbs.
Columbia, SC has one state-sponsored dog park.
Nashville, TN has 3 full-time, off-leash dog parks now.
Savannah, GA has one full-time off-leash dog park.

The city's recreation and parks department is hoping to make the Augusta Golf Hall of Fame and Botanical Gardens into a part-time, off-leash dog park on Sundays from 12pm - 4pm. This park is conveniently located in the heart of downtown, already fully fenced, equipped with water, and has facilities for a part-time attendant.

A small admission or membership fee could be charged to cover maintenance costs at the park, or members could organize fund-raising events to sponsor specific improvements. It is our belief that a park of this nature would be very popular and could fund itself without burdening the city.

Currently, dogs are not allowed off-leash on public lands in the city. So, in order to have an off-leash dog park, the city's leash ordinance needs to be changed to allow owners to have their dogs off-leash.

The commissioners of Augusta, GA will vote on this ordinance on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at 2pm at the Municipal Building.

This is where we need your support. Please sign this petition before March 18, 2008 to show your support for the ordinance change so that owners can allow their dogs to run and play off-leash in the city, specifically inside the Augusta Golf Hall of Fame and Botanical Gardens.

Please join me at the meeting, too, if you can. Every person counts. We need to show the commissioners that Augustans are READY to join the ranks of other southern cities!
We, the undersigned, believe that dog parks provide dogs, and their owners, with an excellent place to play, exercise, and socialize with others like themselves. We, as dog lovers and dog owners in Augusta, would like a chance to give our pets and ourselves such a place.

Responsible dog owners in other cities in the Southeast, such as Atlanta, GA, Columbia, SC, Asheville, NC, and Nashville, TN, have enjoyed off-leash dog parks for years, and it's time for us to do the same.

The city of Augusta could charge a small admission or membership fee to cover maintenance costs at the park, or members could organize fund-raising events to sponsor certain improvements. It is our belief that a park of this nature would be very popular and could fund itself without burdening the city.

We, the undersigned, support the ordinance change to allow dogs to run, play, exercise, and socialize off-leash in designated places in the city of Augusta.

Bringing more people downtown to play and relax will ultimately be good for business and give the people what they want - a better, more inviting, more lively, and more people- and pet-friendly place to live and play.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. We appreciate your support and for helping to make the city of Augusta a place that we're proud to call home.
