Hilary Clinton has taken up the cause to fight poaching and save elephants who are being slaughtered in large numbers to supply the growing demand for ivory in China and other Asian countries. Three quarters of African elephants have been lost to poaching.
76% of the African forest elephant population in the Congo Basin has disappeared due to poaching in the last decade. Including the savanah African elephant, there were 1.2 million elephants in Africa in 1980, compared to 420,000 last year.
As secretary of state, Clinton showed an interest in the plight of African elephants, hosting a conference on the issue in Washington last year. Last month, Clinton, she met privately with representatives from a dozen environmental groups and National Geographic at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Central Park Zoo and pledged to take some very specific steps.
