CALL FOR THE IMMEDIATE FREEDOM OF TUNDU LISSU AND THE UPHOLDING OF THE RULE OF LAW IN TANZANIA

To the Government of Tanzania and the International Community,

We, the undersigned, are writing to express our profound concern regarding the ongoing legal and political persecution of Tundu Lissu, a prominent opposition figure, human rights advocate, and former Member of Parliament in Tanzania. His case is not merely a matter of legal procedure; it is a critical test of Tanzania's commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental human rights. We call for his immediate and unconditional freedom and for the charges against him to be dropped.

Tundu Lissu's courageous advocacy for justice, accountability, and good governance has long made him a target of political harassment. In 2017, he survived a brutal assassination attempt that left him with life-threatening injuries. Rather than being met with justice for this heinous act, he and his family have faced a continuous campaign of intimidation and legal challenges upon his return to the country.

The legal proceedings initiated against Tundu Lissu are widely considered to be politically motivated, designed to silence dissent and suppress political opposition. These actions violate his rights to free expression, political participation, and due process. A functioning democracy requires a vibrant and protected opposition, where leaders can speak freely without fear of retribution. The actions taken against him undermine this core principle.

Furthermore, his case has garnered significant international attention, with human rights organizations, democratic institutions, and foreign governments expressing deep concern. His situation is a stark reminder of the fragile state of civil liberties in Tanzania. By continuing this legal persecution, the government risks further isolating itself from the international community and eroding the trust of its own citizens.

Therefore, we demand the following:

The immediate and unconditional freedom of Tundu Lissu.

The withdrawal of all politically motivated charges against him.

A renewed commitment by the Tanzanian government to respect the rule of law, human rights, and the democratic process.

An independent and transparent investigation into the 2017 assassination attempt against him.
