A major wood fiber concession has begun developing a massive area of forest in West Kalimantan on the island of Indonesian Borneo - threatening critical habitat for many endangered species including the oranguatan.
Nearly 66,900 hectares of forest — nearly half of the 136,710-hectare wood fiber concession — have high conservation value.
Moreover, data issued by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), notes the remaining 46,200 hectares are critical Bornean orangutan habitat.
The wild Bornean orangutan population is left at just 45,000 individuals due to loss of habitat as a result of deforestation on the island.
The province of West Kalimantan lost 280,275 hectares of tree cover in 2012 alone due to mining, wood fiber, and palm oil concessions.
The forests that remain need to be protected and preserved.
