This is the first confirmed case of forced medical treatment on a hunger striker under the current administration, and it comes during a year when hunger strikes have spread across ICE facilities nationwide. At Delaney Hall, a detention center in New Jersey run by the private prison company GEO Group, nearly 300 detainees signed a letter describing medical neglect, unsafe drinking water, and violence, and many joined a hunger strike to demand change.
More than 20 people have died in ICE detention so far this year alone, and the independent watchdog office responsible for investigating abuses like these has been cut from hundreds of employees down to just five.
A hunger strike is one of the only ways someone in detention can protest their own treatment, and ICE responded by strapping a person down and forcing a catheter into their body. This isn't an isolated failure inside one facility, it's what happens when an agency is allowed to detain people with almost no oversight and no accountability for how it treats them.
Abolishing ICE is the only way to guarantee this kind of torture can't keep happening behind closed doors.
