Fighting Diabetes Needs to Be a National Priority
Support the Creation of a National Diabetes Coordinator
- Because diabetes is serious: Diabetes is the one of the leading diseases where the death rate continues to climb.
- Because diabetes affects our children: 1 in 3 boys and 2 in 5 girls born in 2000 are at risk to develop diabetes in their lifetime.
- Because diabetes can cripple our economy: the direct and indirect costs of diabetes and pre-diabetes were an estimated $218 billion in 2007, and the numbers are expected to rise.
- Because we need smart government spending: the federal government spent nearly $80 billion in 2005 on diabetes treatment across 18 of 21 federal government agencies: 400 times more than funding to prevent diabetes
- Because we need a national strategy with effective, coordinated leadership and accountability to solve the diabetes epidemic.
We, the undersigned, petition Congress and the Obama Administration to create a National Diabetes Coordinator, a new leadership position to:
- Prevent diabetes in those who are at risk
- Increase detection of diabetes
- Prevent and manage diabetes-related complications
- Maximize diabetes research and translation, and
- Improve diabetes care
We need a national diabetes strategy to ensure our government is maximizing research and ensuring diabetes-related programs throughout the federal government are properly coordinated, effectively utilized and avoid unnecessary duplication.
Its time to make diabetes a national priority!
