Open letter of sympathy to the citizens of the United Kingdom: We are better together

We are citizens of the European Union and we want to express our sympathy to the citizens of the United Kingdom and to let them know that we want them to stay in the EU. We are better together.

The signatories of this letter, non-British citizens of the European Union, are terribly saddened by Brexit and the prospects that it brings. Over the last two years, we have witnessed a process of increasing political separation between the EU and the UK, and between groups of people, a process of ever deepening divide between "us" and "them". We believe that the time has come for people to express their desire for unity at a human level.

Our motives are not political. They are human. We want Britons to enjoy the freedoms enjoyed by all Europeans, and the protections that European Treaties entitle them to. We know that the European Union is not perfect but we strongly believe that the participation of British people makes it better. This is why we, the signatories of this letter, express our hope that British citizens will not abandon the European Union, but stay and contribute to the building of a Europe that we can all be proud of.
