U.S. Embassies No Longer Have Permission to Fly Pride Flags

  • av: Kevin Mathews

It's become tradition for many U.S. embassies to fly a pride flag beneath the American flag in the month of June. This recognition of LGBTQ Americans began under Obama, and continued under the Trump administration... until this year.

Suddenly, the State Department is denying all requests to hang the pride flag on their poles. While some embassies are commendably finding other ways/places to display the flag to subvert if not defy the White House's order, this reversal of policy is still disconcerting.

After all, the pride flag, like all flags, is a symbol - and there's a lot of symbolism in the Trump White House deciding to keep it off embassy flag poles.

We shouldn't be backtracking on this LGBTQ progress, which is why we're asking the State Department to start approving requests to hang rainbow flags again.
