Stop US supermarkets from destroying edible food!

A few years ago the UK did something incredible. It became the first country in the world to make supermarkets donate unwanted food to charities and food banks. This is a huge step forwards in terms of both sustainability and tackling needless hunger.

Now it's time for the US to do the same. Let's feed our people and end the waste! Please sign this petition to ask the government to ban supermarkets from disposing of or destroying edible food.

Recent figures show that the US throws away a staggering 23 billion pounds of food each year. As we become increasingly aware of how fragile our environment is, and the importance of sustainability, these wasteful practices look very outdated. However, little is being done to overcome this gross squandering of vital resources.

At the same time, use of food banks is rising dramatically as many US citizens struggle to afford the basics. Desperate workers, including student nurses, are turning to charity to feed themselves. Lack of decent, varied meals means dangerous malnutrition for children, elderly people, and people with health needs. Our failure to keep people fed means we are becoming a society without a safety net.

There is no need for anyone to be going hungry in a country that can afford to throw away so much edible food. Please sign this petition to ask the government to ban supermarkets from destroying or binning edible food - and to make them give it charities and food banks instead. If enough people sign, it will make it clear that we want our government to lead the way and to become of the first countries to end food wastage.
