Protect Endangered Florida Panther

The Florida Panther was orignially issued Endangered Species status in 1967. But little or nothing has been done to keep the Florida Panther natural habitat from dwindling. We have had more than 50 years to do something, and we have done nothing to protect this big cat.

Down to only 100 panthers left, their situation is worsening with more habitat loss and inbreeding. Their health, vigor and reproduction ability is rapidly diminishing. As early as the 1980's it was discovered that the panthers were inbreeding yet not enough has been done to increase their habitat range. As of 1993, no develpement in their habitat was blocked, and continues.

These top preditors (and all preditors) are an important part of balancing an ecosystem.

We call on the Obama Administration to act now where other administrations have failed: to buy more land from private and public landowners increasing the habitat range from the Florida Panther Nation Refuge to the Big Cypress National Preserve and all ajacent connecting areas throughout Collier County.

We have waited, and the Florida Panthers have waited for more than 50 years. That's long enough. Designate and protect critical habitat for the Florida Panther.
