Protect South Los Angeles Residents from Oil Drilling Site

Residents of South Los Angeles' West Adams Boulevard -- a low-income area made up of predominantly Latino and black residents with a strong immigrant presence -- are fighting big oil back. Passions are flaring over Freeport-McMoRan's plans to flare excess gas, known as gas flaring.

Gas flaring is known to compromise environmental and human health. The United Nations disapproves of the practice, and it's banned in many countries. A case study from Nigeria reveals the problems associated with gas flaring, including:

-- Climate change
-- Acid rain
-- Soil nutrient depletion (from contaminates unleashed in the atmosphere and acidifying the soil)
-- Compromised human health, including: cancer, neurological, reproductive and developmental effects, deformities in children, lung damage and skin problems. Hematological effects (anemia, pancytopenia and leukemia) are of particular concern.
-- Economic loss
-- Pollution

Whether or not Freeport-McMoRan moves forward with gas flaring, residents are still demanding an environmental review of the oil drilling site.

This type of environmental injustice needs to stop. Please sign and share this petition demanding a thorough environmental review of the Freeport-McMoRan drilling site in South Los Angeles. The health of people and the environment are at stake.
