Tell Maine Not to Trash Curbside Recycling!
Recycling takes the pressure off already crowded landfills and reduces the pollution associated with producing new materials like glass and plastic. So why would any community trash its curbside recycling program?
And yet, that's exactly what's happening in Madison, Maine. There municipal officials are gearing up to eliminate their curbside recycling. Their reasoning? The town has lost tax revenue coming from the local paper factory. This measure is short sighted, at best. No town budget should be balanced by killing recycling initiatives. Recycling is any local government's basic responsibility. Please join me in asking Madison city council to rule against eliminating the curbside program.
Dear Madison City Council Members:
I was really shocked to learn that you are planning to abandon curbside recycling in your community. I think you already know the arguments for recycling, but let me remind you of a few of them. Unrecycled trash has to go somewhere. That means it will end up in landfills which are obnoxious to voters who live near them. Where will your unrecycled trash go? Do you even have enough landfills to accommodate it, or do you plan to build more? And have you weighed the cost of doing that against the cost of continuing to recycle? Recycling also cuts down on pollution that is the outcome of producing new materials such as glass, plastic, and paper. Please vote a resounding NO on eliminating your recycling program.
