THANKS and WELCOME to old and new signers of the Protect America's Wolves! petition: http://signon.org/sign/protect-americas-wolves?source=s.em.cr&r_by=4579832&mailing_id=5571

This is an URGENT UPDATE!
There is a female alpha wolf, the mother of four young pups, in the Gila National Forest of New Mexico, that is right now being hunted, WITH LEG HOLD TRAPS, for capture and removal to a life in captivity. She will lose her freedom and life with her family. Her pups will lose their mother. This kind of trauma can lead to the death and destruction of the pups and their seven member wolf pack. These leg hold traps could capture, permanently maim or kill her pups or any unfortunate animal that wanders into them.

Background Information:
The Gila National Forest is part of a Mexican gray wolf recovery zone. The Mexican gray wolf is a distinct genetic group of wolves that had lived in Mexico and the Southwest United States for thousands of years. Hundreds of years of persectution and massacre eliminated them from their homeland in Mexico and the US. United States wildlife officials acting on behalf of the American people who demanded recovery and protection of the nation's native wildlife, including America's wolves, re-introduced captive Mexican gray wolves back into their homeland in the late 1990's. These endangered wolves have not been well protected, from wolf-hating poachers and hostile ranchers. Currently there are fewer than sixty of these wolves in New Mexico and Arizona.

This mother wolf is accused of predating on four cows, a tiny number, over a fourteen month period for which the ranchers have been fully compensated! The ranchers in the area suffer far more cattle loss from cattle thieves, from weather, disease and from their cows eating poison plants. Last week, the mother wolf was ordered to be killed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service but a public outcry led to the order to capture her instead. Her Fox Mountain Pack, consisting of this alpha female, her alpha male mate, their four pups and a year old wolf, are part of only six breeding pairs in all of New Mexico and Arizona. To remove her from the wild would be traumatic, unjust and devastating to wolf recovery in the Southwest.

Cattle should not be allowed to graze in the wolf recovery zones of the Gila National Forest and on other public lands in the region. These public lands belong to the American people, not to private ranchers who are being heavily subsidized by American taxpayers to graze their cows where they do not belong.

The fact that the US Forest Service, and other federal agencies, allow cows to wander for miles and graze in endangered wolf recovery zones is a ridiculous recipe for disaster and a regular excuse for continuous removal and killing of endangered wolves! To scapegoat and imprison this female wolf mom, because of human stupidity on the part of the US Fish & Wildlife Service, the US Forest Service and the irresponsible ranchers, is unbelievably unjust and cruel. As more Americans and wildlife lovers from around the world, including school children, learn of the plight of this alpha wolf mom and her four pups and the extremely heartless, stupid and unjust policies behind this situation, the pressure to keep this mom wild and free and with her pups will only grow and grow.

The US wildlife officials listed below, along with President Obama, must hear from YOU and be pressured immediately to keep this mother wolf alive and free and in the wild with her pups. These officials must be pressured now to defend and protect all the endangered Mexican gray wolves in their designated wolf recovery zone. They must be urged to withdraw the grazing permits that allow cattle to wander for miles in wolf habitat.

The plight of this innocent and beautiful wolf and her four pups is a rallying cry for justice and respect for America's wolves everywhere!

NOW THAT YOU HAVE THE FACTS, PLEASE EMAIL (and call) THESE NATIONAL OFFICIALS:
and firmly but politely demand that they keep this mother wolf wild and free, with her pups, her mate and family pack. Instead, it is the cattle that need to be moved out of this wolf recovery zone!
