Australia: Act on Recommendations from the Close the Gap Committee!

In Australia, Aboriginal people have life expectancies between 9-12 years less, on average, than non-indigenous Australians. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were nearly two times as likely to be hospitalized for cardiovascular disease than other Australians in 2013. Close the Gap has been working incredibly hard at improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations. Yet the Australian government has been failing, and it is time they listen to the recommendations of the Close the Gap campaign.

These horrific statistics, which are just a few out of many, have been shared widely. As a result, Close the Gap, a campaign aimed at improving health outcomes for indigenous peoples, was created on the premise that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should not have to be unequal, unfair health burdens.

Despite incredible breakthroughs from Close the Gap itself, the Australian government has missed target on a number of goals it set. According to a federal report, they are only on track to meet one of their goals out of seven.

Aboriginal people deserve the same long, healthy lives that non-indigenous Australians live. Sign now if you agree that it is the obligation of the Australian government to take Close The Gap's recommendations seriously!
