New York's Environmental Facilities Corporation was implemented to pay for restoration of the state's natural resources and projects that will ensure New Yorkers safe, clean drinking water. So why is $511 million of that fund being used to build the Tappan Zee bridge?
New York's own environmental experts have declared the state's aging wastewater management system a future disaster waiting to happen. Some of the state's sewers have outlived their shelf life by decades.
And there's already a bridge there. Environmental studies show that removal of that bridge will adversely effect the local environment. So, again, why is an environmental fund being spent on this project?
Tell Governor Cuomo not to raid clean water funds to build an unnecessary bridge.
Dear Governor Cuomo:
We the undersigned are appalled that you are diverting funds meant to protect the environment and ensure safe drinking water to construct a new bridge. The proposed Tappan Zee Bridge is, by all accounts, an environmental disaster. Just demolishing the old bridge will devastate the river's fragile wildlife and endanger water quality.
Meanwhile your wastewater infrastructure is failing. You have the funds available to fix it, but the $511 million you propose to pull from the Environmental Facilities Corporation will seriously jeopardize the state's ability to protect its vital clean water. Those funds should be used for their intended purpose, not to enrich the state's contractors on behalf of a short-sighted pork scheme. Please don't raid clean water funds to build this bridge!
