My community has been very lacking when it comes to animal welfare, but recently a very well needed animal rescue effort has begun!
Furever Friends is a fairly new nonprofit organization created to help abused and abandoned animals within my area. They are currently in the process of setting up a permanent location which involves finding a suitable area of land and building the shelter itself. The plan is for the building to include animal housing, medical facilities, a visitation room and an education center. Of course, this will take a lot of work and as much help as they can get!
Even without an official location, Furever Friends has already been helping animals locally. In the state of Iowa, pets are seen as property rather than as living beings. Having seen animal abuse in my own neighborhood and hearing from law enforcement that nothing can be done because the pets are "property" is an angering and disappointing feeling. There is though the option of getting the animal owner to surrender their animals, and Furever Friends have proven they are willing to make the attempt and to fight for these animals' rights.
This is extremely important to my community and I want to help make sure this organization gets everything they need as soon as possible to reach their full potential.
