Canada - Don't Reduce Fish Habitat Protection

  • av: Judith B.

In what seems like yet another attack on the environment, and indeed the future of the fishing industry, the Federal Government is planning to reduce essential fish habitat protection.

Under the Fisheries Act, important fish breeding and feeding areas receive some protection, although probably not enough given that Canada’s fish stocks are in continual decline.

Now the government wants to further weaken this already inadequate protection, putting the country's aquatic ecosystems and the future of the fishing industry in even greater danger than they already are. The proposed changes would allow suspension of habitat protection for almost any purpose.

First Nations representatives, environmentalists and hundreds of scientists have voiced their concerns, but so far the government appears to be paying no attention.

Canada has already experienced the devastating consequences of not looking after its natural resources properly. Tell the Federal Government not to let this happen again.

We the undersigned ask that you do not continue with plans to reduce protection for fish habitats. Canada’s aquatic resources already face a multitude of threats. With fish stocks in decline, the government needs to take more action to preserve the country’s natural resources, not weaken existing legislation to appease certain vested interests.

Thank you for your attention.
