Tell the Port Authority to Stop Shooting Animals!

Since 2008, the Port Authority has killed nearly 6,000 animals, mostly birds, that have moved too close to airport runways. Their animal control efforts increased significantly after a flock of Canada geese collided with US Airways flight 1549, an incident that caused no loss of human life.

The Port Authority's actions have had no significant impact on animal collisions, according to the Star Ledger's analysis of Port Authority and Federal Aviation Administration data. Yet the slaughter has skyrocketed in the past five years. In 2008, for example, only 10 animals were killed at Newark's airport, but 1,267 were killed two years later.

These wildlife control efforts are worthless and cruel. If the Port Authority wants to rid airports of animals, they can make habitats around the airport less attractive. This would be a humane, long-term solution. Please sign the petition to tell the Port Authority to stop shooting animals!

We, the undersigned, are concerned with the Port Authority's ineffective animal control measures. Since 2008, the Port Authority has killed nearly 6,000 animals, mostly birds, that have moved too close to airport runways. We understand that these animal control efforts increased significantly after a flock of Canada geese collided with US Airways flight 1549, an incident that caused no loss of human life.

These wildlife control efforts are ineffective and cruel. It would be more effective, and more humane, to make wildlife habitats around the airport less attractive. We respectfully urge you to end your post-2008 practices of killing wildlife around airports. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
