Applaud Creation of Ape Sanctuary

"One of the world’s rarest apes, the Cross River gorillas, will have a better chance of surviving thanks to Prime Minister Philemon Yang who officially created the Tofala Hill Wildlife Sanctuary in South West Cameroon. The sanctuary is meant to protect the apes from threats such as hunting and habitat destruction, which are greatly responsible for the gorillas decline. Thank the prime minister for creating a refuge for the Cross River gorilla.

The Cross River gorilla is known for its tool use, and spend an extensive amount of their lives on the ground. Unfortunately all western gorillas are endangered, but the Cross River gorillas are the most threatened. Despite being hunted for bush meat, Cross River gorillas are losing their habitat thanks to companies who are clear cutting the forest to plant palm oil plantations.

To combat the palm oil industry, Cameroon has created other refuges for the gorillas. The National Takamanda National Park and Kagwene Gorilla Sanctuary were created in 2008 to stop poachers from killing these endangered apes. It is agreed that the best way to give these gorillas a chance to survive is to fend off poachers and give them plenty of land to survive. The Tofala Hill Wildlife Sanctuary was also created thanks to generous supporters and donors who care about the longevity of the Cross River gorilla. Thank Prime Minister Philemon Yang for making this sanctuary official, giving the Cross River gorilla a chance to thrive."
