A new bill inspired by the rape allegations against Bill Cosby would remove the statute of limitations for sexual abuse cases in Colorado.
At least two of the women who say Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted them live in Colorado. The state currently has a 10-year statute of limitations for such cases, except when the victim is under 15.
According to state Representative Rhonda Fields, a Democrat who introduced the bill along with Republican Senator John Cooke, victims "don't stop being a victim after 10 years. Why should a violent crime just expire because of a time limit?"
The new bill, if passed into law, wouldn't work retroactively. This means it wouldn't help the women who Bill Cosby allegedly assaulted. But it would work to help victims of sexual assault get justice moving forward.
