Discrimination Against College Athlete’s Spectator Attendance

As COVID-19 rates have dropped, Governor Cuomo has given the greenlight for certain sporting events to allow spectators while others cannot. As it stands right now, only stadiums with a 10,000-person capacity or greater can allow fans.

Furthermore, the Governor allowed for ‘high-risk’ high school sports to play and allow spectators with the permission of respective county officials.

Between these two policies is a glaring oversight for smaller collegiate sporting events whose stadiums do not meet capacity requirements and county health officials do not have jurisdiction.

There isn’t sound reasoning for this policy – large stadiums are required to adhere to a 10% capacity limit – a rule that could easily be set for small schools as well. With proper guidelines, there is no sound argument to deny limited spectators, especially for outdoor sporting events.

As a college athlete, parent or family member, or friend of a student athlete and a resident of New York State I ask you please call for this oversight to be corrected to allow for fair standards to be implemented for all sporting events.
