Florida: It's Time to Legally Ban Orca Captivity

As the tide of public opinion continues to turn against keeping whales and dolphins in captivity, animal advocates are applauding the introduction of a major bill that would officially ban orca captivity in Florida.

The Florida Orca Protection Act (HB 1305), which was just introduced by Representative Jared Moskowitz, is similar to the groundbreaking ban passed in California that went into effect in 2016.

It would ban the use of orcas as performers in theme shows, ban captive breeding and end the import and export of orcas into and out of the state.

While SeaWorld has pledged to end captive breeding and its theatrical shows, supporters of the bill want to ensure the company can't go back on its word.

While the six current orcas it has in captivity will be grandfathered in, this legislation will ensure they are the last generation to ever suffer in captivity in the state, and it would also extend protection to Lolita, who is being held alone at the Miami Seaquarium.
