The Powan is living in northern lakes as well brackish waters and it belongs to the salmon fishes and are swimming in herds.
In Finland has find five to six different Powans. The sides are silvercoloured and it reminds the European cisco, which is very good fish. I remember when we were kids we had the whole day sauna...swimming...sauna swimming...and so on. When we went to sauna we always took a Cisco which had been in salt one day and eat them. When you are in sauna for hours you need salt which we didn't think but it was good.
The Powan has the adipose fin like all the salmon fishes.

I put here a picture when I was at dawn fishing ...it was about 45 years ago ...how much fishes I got ...so that it was hard to keep the nets in air. How much all kind of fishes there were...but not any more.
