Recently in Boca das Tropas, Brazil, a proposed hydroelectric dam is threatening the waters and indigenous peoples of the Amazon.
The Brazilian government, in an effort to appease the demands of "national developemnt," is proposing to build a dozen dams along the peaceful waters of the Amazonian Tapajos River.
The government has sent scientists to test the river water and has sent soliders into villages for "protection." The local Mundruku Indians were neither consulted about these plans, nor listened to attentively. If these dams are built there will be flooding of the lands, and many local species and populations will lose their homes. The Munduruku are protesting, but are largely ignored.

Dear Dilma Rousseff,
We are petitioning you to ask to put an end to the plans for a hydroelectric dam along the riverbanks of the Tapajos River.
Building the proposed 12 dams there will have hazardous effects upon the indiginious populations and the surrounding environment. According to the International Labour Organisation's Convention 169, the Brazilian government should have set up a consultation with the Indian populations before conducting studies, making development plans, and militarizing the Indian's public space.
If the dams go in, there will be horrific flooding and damage to local wildlife populations. We are asking that you listen to the Indigenous peoples and discontinue plans to construct dams along the Tapajos River.
