Tell the California State Assembly to Allow Public Financing of Elections

Big money contributions and expenditures by millionaires and special interests are dominating elections. The voices of regular voters are drowned out, with most Americans believing money has far too much influence in politics.

That's why we need public financing of campaigns so that elected officials are accountable to voters, not Big Money donors.

Unfortunately, public financing of campaigns in California is banned throughout the state except for in larger, charter cities.

Now California has the opportunity to take the lead for public financing of elections.  SB 1107, authored by Senator Ben Allen, co-authored by Senator Loni Hancock, and sponsored by California Common Cause and the California Clean Money Campaign, will amend the ban to allow for public financing of campaigns that are paid for by dedicated campaign finance trust funds.

SB 1107 is scheduled for its final Assembly vote on Monday, August 29th!

Dear [Your Assemblymember],

I am concerned that the state of California is mandating what campaign finance options that cities and counties have, and that I don't have a real voice in elections because small contributions can't compete with big money from special interests and millionaires.

That's why I stand with the California Clean Money Campaign and all the other organizations asking you to vote "Yes" on SB 1107 to lift the ban on voluntary public financing of campaigns and prohibit foreign contributions to candidates. Local governments and the state deserve the flexibility to explore public financing systems to strengthen the public trust and amplify the voices of everyday Californians.
