Protect New York City's Environment

In an environmentally-friendly move, the New York City Council has introduced Bill No. 1135, which requires a 10-cent minimum charge for carryout bags in New York City grocery and retail stores.

Plastic bags are designed to be used only for a short period of time, but their negative impacts are long-lasting. Even when properly disposed of, plastic bags often blow away onto the street or into waterways, where they become eyesores, clog storm drains, and endanger wildlife.

Bill 1135 will dramatically reduce single-use plastic and paper bags in New York City by getting residents to think twice about whether they really need a bag and encouraging reusable bag use. This will keep New York City neighborhoods cleaner and more sustainable.

As the largest city in the United States, New York needs to join the many other cities that have already adopted legislation restricting the use of these bags.

Dear [decision-maker],

I support New York City Council Bill No. 1135, which requires a 10-cent minimum charge for carryout bags in New York City grocery and retail stores, and stores would retain the entire amount of the charge.

This bill will dramatically reduce single-use plastic and paper bags in New York City by getting us to think twice about whether we really need a bag and encouraging reusable bag use. Plastic bags are designed to be used only for a short period of time, but their negative impacts are long-lasting. Even when properly disposed of, plastic bags often blow away onto the street or into waterways, where they become eyesores, clog storm drains, endanger wildlife, and impact our neighborhoods negatively.

As the largest city in the United States, New York needs to join the many other cities that have already adopted legislation restricting the use of these bags.
