Risking their lives to save their land - Stand with the men and women fighting for their home

For the Indigenous Lenca people in Honduras, the land is their life. But mining giants are out to exploit that land. MILPAH, an Indigenous independent movement, is at the forefront of this battle.

Honduras is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be an environmental activist. MILPAH have braved death threats, physical assault and smear campaigns in their fight to protect their land.

In October 2015, MILPAH's Ana Miriam Romero was 24 weeks pregnant when armed men stormed her house and beat her up. The following January, her house was torched. Then in July 2016, two men threatened to kill her colleague.

Last year, Berta Cáceres, from a partner organisation that campaigned against a hydroelectric dam and was brutally murdered. We can't let this go on.

Stand alongside these brave men and women fighting for their home.

Join our call on the President of Honduras to protect MILPAH.

Dear President, Juan Orlando Hernández

I stand in solidarity with MILPAH, the Independent Lenca Indigenous Movement of La Paz, who are risking their lives to save their land from exploitation.

I call on you to:

  • ensure the safety of MILPAH members in accordance with their wishes.

  • publicly recognise the important and legitimate work of MILPAH, and all human rights defenders addressing issues related to land, territory and the environment.
