The Death Penalty is a Waste of California's Money

National polls have shown America is losing confidence in the death penalty -- and with good reason.

The Death Penalty Information Center reports that states like California waste about 137 million dollars per year on the death penalty, which, with our budget crisis, we simply can't afford to do. Even if California narrowed its death-eligible crimes, it would only reduce the cost by about 7 million dollars.

On the other hand, if we abolish the death penalty altogether, we could save 125 million dollars.

The death penalty is rarely used -- only 13 people have been executed since 1977 -- so keeping inmates on death row is a waste of money that we never see results from anyway. Not only would it be more humane, but it would be more cost-effective and logical to sentence top criminals to life in prison without possibility of parole.

The death penalty is an irrelevant waste of money. Tell Governor Schwarzenegger to make the logical choice and abolish the death penalty in California.

National polls show, America is losing confidence in the death penalty. Capital punishment is doing almost nothing in California but costing us money. Make the logical choice to abolish the death penalty in California.
