Recently, Georgia governor Nathan Deal signed one of the harshest bills around immigration into law.
HB 87, a copycat of Arizona's recent immigration law, allows undocumented workers to be charged with felonies and carries the punishment of up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Georgia citizens who commit traffic violations with an undocumented worker in the vehicle can also be faced with up to a year in prison and $1,000 in fines.
Immigration law and reform is a complex and varied issue, but imposing a law that effectively legalizes racial profiling is shameful. We need fair just and humane laws that don't lead to stereotypes and profiling.

I am shocked at the passing of HB 87 and the harsh punishments and assumptions that the law creates.
