Encourage US Timeshare Resorts to Use Energy Efficient CFL lighting

As the largest contributor to global warming emissions, the United States must step up and take a leadership role in rectifying the situation.  Some steps are absolutely painless to take, but simply require awareness and a little motivation.  It’s as easy as changing a light bulb!  Change can’t get much easier than that, and each of us should make the switch in our own homes.  However, there’s a much bigger opportunity for us to make a difference by insisting that our timeshare organizations (our homes away from home) here in the US take that same very simple step and change to CFL lighting.

On a recent stay in a typical 2 bedroom timeshare unit, over 30 incandescent bulbs were counted.  Like most resorts, there are hundreds and hundreds of units on each property—each with dozens of incandescent bulbs.  “Though we call them light bulbs, traditional incandescent bulbs are actually small heaters that give off a little bit of light—something you know if you've ever touched a bulb that's been on for a while. These bulbs were technological wonders when they were patented in 1880, but today they are inefficient dinosaurs. They waste energy and money, and they are responsible for millions of tons of global warming pollution.”  (www.fightglobalwarming.com/page.cfm?tagID=269, accessed 10/30/06.)

Personal experience proves these statements to be true.  After making no other change than replacing all incandescent for CFL bulbs in our home, our daily energy usage has decreased by 25% over the last year for two months in a row!  Prior to the switch, monthly power usage was significantly above the prior year 5 of the 7 months available for comparison.  Please act now by changing your own bulbs AND insisting timeshares in the US make that same change.   Sign this petition to be sent to all timeshares operating in the US and personally contact any timeshare with which you are affiliated.  There is no time to waste!

As the largest contributor of global warming emissions, the United States must step up and take a leadership role in rectifying the situation.  Some steps are absolutely painless to take, but simply require awareness and a little motivation.  It’s as easy as changing a light bulb!

In the environmental defense organization’s column, “Ask Dr Bill:  Your global warming questions answered,” Dr Bill Chameides states:

If every household in America changed three bulbs, it would be the equivalent of taking 3.5 million cars off the road.  (

According to The Union of Concerned Scientists’ list of common sense solutions to global warming:

Light bulbs matter.

Lighting uses nearly one-quarter of all the electricity in the United States, and much of this electricity is generated from polluting fossil fuel power plants. So replace your incandescent light bulbs with more efficient compact fluorescent lights, which now come in all shapes and sizes. You will be doing your share to cut back on heat-trapping pollution and you’ll save money on energy and light bulbs.

Timeshare resorts are a wonderful part of tourism and travel across the United States.  As our  “home away from home,” we could all relax and enjoy our timeshare stay so much more knowing that we are using the energy efficiency we use in our own homes—CFL bulbs.

Please step up to the challenge of reducing US carbon emissions by changing your resort’s lighting to CFL.  Advertise to your guests that you are making a difference in the fight against global warming.  It’s a win-win opportunity, and there’s no time to waste!
