No Fracking in North Carolina

Fracking (or hydraulic fracturing) is a highly controversial process of drilling for natural gas that has been linked to groundwater contamination in Wyoming, earthquakes in Northeast Ohio from the waste disposal process, and even tap water that can be lit on fire in Pennsylvania. While fracking is currently illegal in North Carolina, some state legislators introduced a bill that would fast track its legalization.

Fracking uses high pressure to inject hundreds of chemicals (including known toxins and carcinogens), sand, and massive amounts of water into a well to open fissures in the rock that help release natural gas. But fracking has potentially devastating impacts like pollution of groundwater, dangerous levels of methane in drinking water, increased strain on water supplies in growing times of drought, and toxic waste disposal problems.

Industry lobbyists and anti-environment legislators aren't going to give up on their mad rush to legalize fracking -- even though the industry itself says it wouldn't come to North Carolina for two decades or more. Sign our petition to Governor Perdue and your state legislators, urging them to say no to fracking in our beautiful state.
Dear [Decision Maker],

I am opposed to any legislation in the General Assembly that would put North Carolina on the path to legalize fracking in our state. Fracking has had a steady wave of complaints and problems in states where it has been legalized. In fact, no state is a model that shows it can be done safely. North Carolina does not need to legalize this controversial practice when the natural gas industry itself predicts it would not drill here for over 20 years because of our minimal pockets of natural gas. I urge you to oppose any legislation that would lead legalize fracking in North Carolina
