No New Nukes

In just a few weeks, our senators will vote on an appropriations bill (S 1424) which could increase nuclear weapons research -- even though we already have nuclear arsenals capable of destroying the earth and all life on it over and over again!

The House of Representatives already decided more nuclear weapons are financially irresponsible and unnessesary; they cut virtually all of the money requested for new nuclear weapons and research. Please make sure your senators do the same!

By continuing to support nuclear weapons, the U.S. threatens our fragile international nuclear non-proliferation agreements and encourages other countries to develop their own nuclear weapons programs. How can the U.S. demand that Iran, North Korea, and others disarm if the U.S. continues to build its arsenal? If the U.S. wants lasting peace and security, new nuclear weapons research is not the answer.

ACT NOW: Sign the petition below to urge your senators to block funding for new nuclear weapons when the energy and water appropriations bill reaches the Senate floor. Your comments will be faxed to your senators.

I am very relieved that the House of Representatives recently cut most of the money requested for research on new nuclear weapons in the energy and water appropriations bill. I urge you to act with similar conscience and actively support amendments to cut the funding for new nuclear weapons in the Senate version of the energy and water appropriations bill (S 1424). New nuclear weapons research would likely lead to further proliferation and undermine U.S. security.

The fact that the U.S., an unrivaled global military power, continues to rely on nuclear weapons for its security, reinforces the idea that these weapons can lead to national security. How can the U.S. demand that Iran, North Korea, and others disarm if the U.S. is continuing to develop its arsenal? If the U.S. wants lasting peace and security, new nuclear weapons research is not the answer.
