Lend Your Support for 5G Ultra Wideband Expansion in New Orleans

As the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted, reliable connectivity has become essential to our daily lives, enabling people to connect to their school, friends, family, colleagues and government services. 5G is rolling out in cities across the U.S., and New Orleans city leaders can make decisions now to support it in our local community. If you want to help support expanded wireless networks in New Orleans, it is critical that your voice be heard today.

Our city needs the investment of ultra-fast wireless service and infrastructure that will help facilitate essential connectivity and keep our economy strong and our education equitable. Mobile technology is reshaping the way we live and do business, and 5G is a fundamental platform for its continued innovation. This next generation of wireless infrastructure can facilitate an entirely new type of home broadband service, opening a new option for reliable high-speed internet access. This technology can also help bridge the digital divide and move towards digital equity, providing new connectivity and newfound opportunities for people in New Orleans.

5G, which is regulated by the FCC, is safe for communities and consumers. Radiofrequency energy used to transmit information without wires has been safely used for over 100 years. The FCC standards have wide safety margins and are designed to protect everyone, including children. These standards were adopted after examining the RF research that scientists in the US and around the world have conducted for decades. Based on that research, federal agencies have concluded that equipment and networks that comply with the safety standards pose no known health risks. Today, the technology is used for life's daily connections — from radios and televisions to smart watches/fitness trackers and wireless headphones, Bluetooth and WiFi routers, and even baby monitors.

5G can help facilitate essential connectivity and take it to the next level. Imagine students and faculty at all grade levels, including those at Tulane and Xavier, having the ability to remotely visit the MET or pyramids of Egypt from their virtual classroom using VR/AR technology. Even medical professionals at Ochsner Medical Center or University Medical Center New Orleans could leverage 3-D scans to better treat patients.

This type of connectivity is also expected to completely transform transportation and public safety. New augmented and virtual reality systems could help first responders, police officers, and firefighters protect our community, and more broadly, our way of life. Now more than ever, homebuyers are also prioritizing fast reliable home internet and good cellular service, naming it as one of the top factors when looking for a home. A study, conducted in partnership with Morning Consult, found that access to high-speed home internet and fast, reliable cell service at home is a must-have for homebuyers. Nearly 8-in-10 American homebuyers surveyed believe 5G home internet and access to a 5G cell network increased a home's value.  Two-thirds of realtors say their clients more frequently sought information about access to broadband home internet and cellular service over the past year than before the pandemic.

But to make 5G a reality, and make New Orleans a "Smart City", our elected leaders need to know there's widespread public support. We are a city full of visionaries, creators, teachers, and innovators, we face our challenges head on and work to find bold solutions. To build momentum to bring this cutting-edge technology to residents and businesses throughout the city, it's important your leaders see letters of support from community members like you.

A connected city is a thriving city. Tell New Orleans officials to expedite the 5G rollout now to open up new ways for our community to live, learn, work, and play.
Dear [Municipal Leader],

As a local community member, I'm writing to urge you to fast track the 5G network for New Orleans. The benefits to people who live and work in New Orleans, to local businesses and to the entire community are too great to let delays get in the way:

• 5G will make education more accessible and interactive — Students will be able to transform their learning opportunities at all grade levels with digital learning applications, AR and VR experiences, and cloud technologies.

• 5G will provide a powerful tool to help close the digital divide — Robust broadband infrastructure is essential to making progress toward serving all residents with high-speed internet, helping ensure children and adults are not left behind in our rapidly transforming digital economy.

• 5G will supercharge local job growth — With the potential to attract new businesses, it's estimated 5G could create more than 38,900 jobs in Louisiana with an estimated growth of over $12.4 billion to our state's economy.

• 5G will improve city services, transportation and public safety — First responders, police officers, and firefighters will be able to coordinate faster, sharing vital emergency information in real-time to help protect our community.

• 5G will lower health care costs while elevating care — Virtual healthcare will be raised to new levels, and remote care will be made even more effective and accessible to those who need it most.

This is your chance not only to deliver for your constituents, but to demonstrate thought leadership and be part of transforming our region into a national 5G leader. Please do whatever you can to help accelerate the 5G rollout for the New Orleans.

Sincerely,
